About Consecration Candlesticks
When a church is dedicated, consecration crosses are placed on its walls, and a candle is set beside each one. This collection offers consecration candlesticks for that purpose: wall-mounted brass candle arms in polished and lacquered finishes, from simple brackets to ornate backplates up to about 24 inches tall.
Most take a 1 1/2-inch candle, a few take 7/8-inch candles, and each listing gives the backplate size and how far the arm projects from the wall.
Planning a set
Count the consecration crosses in your church and order the same number of candlesticks so they match. Mounting screws are usually not included, so plan fixings for your wall. Consecration Candlesticks
In the Sacred Liturgy
In the Traditional Latin Mass, an additional candle may be lit at the Sanctus, just before the Canon of the Mass begins, and left burning until after Communion. This consecration candle, also called the Sanctus candle, honors Christ, who at the consecration becomes truly present on the altar under the appearances of bread and wine.
The consecration candle stands on the Epistle side of the altar. Its candlestick is usually smaller and simpler in form than the main altar candlesticks, so that it is clearly distinct from them, and it is set where it will not crowd the altar or hide the sacred action from view. Though the custom became rare in many places, it is cherished in parishes that offer the traditional liturgy.
Consecration candlesticks are typically made of brass or bronze, often gilded, and are designed to complement the altar candlesticks and crucifix. Their small flame is a quiet act of faith in the Real Presence.
