About this collection

About Thabors (Exposition Thrones)

A thabor, also called a tabor, raises the monstrance above the altar so the Blessed Sacrament can be seen during exposition. This collection offers thabors in solid brass, from simple stands with a square mensa to angel designs, as well as large brass angels sold individually for a tabernacle, monstrance or thabor.

Mensa tops run from about 10 by 8 inches to 17 by 12 inches, and heights are generally between 6 and 10 inches. Several models can be ordered in a gold finish, priced on request.

What to check

Measure the base of your monstrance against the mensa, and check the space on your altar or gradine. Listed prices currently run from about $1,150 to $2,590. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also monstrances and tabernacles.

Thabors (Exposition Thrones)

In the Sacred Liturgy

A thabor (also spelled tabor) is a stand or throne on which the monstrance is placed during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It raises the monstrance above the altar so that the Host can be clearly seen by everyone who comes to adore, and gives Our Lord a place of honor, like a throne for a king.

At Exposition the priest or deacon places the Host in the monstrance and incenses the Blessed Sacrament. The monstrance is often set on a thabor or exposition throne, which may have a canopy and a backing of rich fabric or metalwork, and is surrounded by candles. The faithful kneel in silent adoration, and the time of prayer often ends with Benediction, when the priest blesses the people with the Sacrament.

Thabors are commonly made of brass, often gilded, and many feature angels kneeling in adoration at either side or supporting the platform on which the monstrance rests.

Be still, and know that I am God.
