New Marble Altar Rails
In the Sacred Liturgy
The altar rail, also called the communion rail, is a low barrier that runs across the front of the sanctuary, separating it from the nave. It marks the sanctuary as a holy place, set apart for the offering of the Holy Sacrifice, while still allowing everyone to see the altar.
The altar rail is also where the faithful traditionally kneel to receive Holy Communion. Kneeling side by side, communicants receive the Host on the tongue as the priest moves along the rail, accompanied by a server holding the communion plate. Many rails have a broad top ledge, over which a white communion cloth may be laid, and gates that open into the sanctuary.
Marble rails are a lasting choice. They are often carved with balusters, columns or panels bearing symbols such as the chalice and Host, the Lamb of God, or wheat and grapes, and are often designed to match a marble altar.
