Carved symbols give an altar, ambo or reredos its meaning at a glance. This collection offers carved wood symbols and relief panels: Marian crowns and Marian symbols, St Joseph symbols, the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart, the Chi-Rho, the Lamb with or without rays, roses, crosses, carved angels, and altar panels of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St John the Baptist and St Patrick. It also includes Gothic niche and reredos reliefs and a set of figural wall reliefs.
Many symbols come in 6, 8, 10 and 12-inch sizes, and several can be carved to any size.
Choosing a symbol
Measure the panel or front where the carving will go, and decide whether it will be stained to match or painted and gilded. Listed prices currently run from about $50 to $1,200. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also Marian appliques and Christ appliques.

In the Sacred Liturgy
Church architecture has always taught the faith through its decoration. Carved symbols and relief panels, fixed to altars, reredoses, ambos, pulpits, doors and walls, remind everyone who enters of the mysteries of salvation and of the saints who intercede for us.
Traditional symbols include the Lamb of God, often shown with rays of light, a sign of Christ sacrificed and risen; the Chi-Rho monogram of Christ; wheat and grapes, signs of the Eucharist; the Marian monogram and crown; the lily of St Joseph; and the cross. Relief panels go further, depicting figures and scenes such as the Sacred Heart, Our Lady with the Christ Child, Our Lady of Perpetual Help or the patron saint of a parish, carved so that they rise from the surface of the panel.
Panels and symbols can be designed for a new altar or reredos, or carved to complete or restore existing woodwork. They are usually made of hardwood and may be left natural, painted or gilded.
