Mary Appliques
In the Sacred Liturgy
Christian art has long honored the Blessed Virgin Mary not only with images but with symbols. Carved as appliqués, they can be fixed to the front of a Lady altar, a shrine, a reredos, a panel or a wall, marking a place set apart in her honor.
Among the most familiar is the Marian monogram, the letter M, often entwined with an A for Ave Maria, "Hail Mary," and topped with a crown recalling Mary's queenship in heaven. The Immaculate Heart of Mary is shown pierced by a sword and surrounded by roses or flames, recalling Simeon's prophecy that a sword would pierce her soul, and her pure love for God. The crown, the lily of purity, the rose, and a circle of twelve stars are other traditional Marian symbols.
Marian appliqués are usually carved in wood and may be left natural, painted or gilded, often to match the furnishings of a Lady chapel or side altar.
