About this collection
About Holy Water Bucket & Sprinkler
The asperges, blessings and funerals all call for a holy water bucket and sprinkler. This collection offers brass buckets (aspersoria) and sprinklers (aspergills), most polished and lacquered, sold as matched sets or as separate sprinklers. Some buckets have a removable liner for easy cleaning.
You will also find a standing holy water sprinkler that unscrews to fill, useful at funerals, and brass baptismal shells for pouring water at baptism.
What to check
Look at the bucket height with the handle, the sprinkler length and tip size, and whether a liner is included. A sprinkler sold on its own can replace a worn one in an existing set. Listed prices currently run from about $80 to $1,090. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also holy water fonts and lavabo sets.
Holy Water Bucket & Sprinkler
In the Sacred Liturgy
The holy water bucket, or aspersorium, is a small vessel with a handle that holds holy water. The sprinkler, or aspergillum, is dipped into it to sprinkle the faithful and the places and objects being blessed. It is often a metal rod ending in a hollow, pierced ball, though some sprinklers are a brush of bristles.
The best-known use is the Asperges, the rite before the principal Sunday Mass, when the priest sprinkles the altar, the clergy and the people while the choir sings "Asperges me," from Psalm 51 (Psalm 50 in the Latin numbering), or, in Eastertide, "Vidi aquam." Holy water recalls our Baptism and is a sign of cleansing from sin. The bucket and sprinkler are also used for blessings of homes, graves and religious objects, at funerals and in processions.
They are usually made of brass or silver-plate, often as a matching pair, and are sometimes engraved with crosses or other Christian symbols.
