About this collection
About Figural Reliefs
Reliefs bring sacred images to walls, alcoves and side chapels where a full statue will not fit. This collection offers figural reliefs and plaques from about 12 to 46 inches tall: several versions of the Madonna and Child, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Sacred Heart, Tobias and the Angel Raphael, and the Sacrifice of Isaac.
Most reliefs are offered in white or in full color, with color priced as an option.
Placing a relief
Measure the wall and check the depth of the relief so it sits well in a niche or above a door. Consider lighting from above, which brings out the carved detail. Listed prices currently run from about $100 to $1,040. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also statues of Our Lady and wall plaques.
Figural Reliefs
In the Sacred Liturgy
A relief is a sculpture carved or cast so that the figures rise from a flat background rather than standing free. Sacred reliefs have adorned churches for centuries, on altars and doors, along walls and above doorways, telling the story of salvation in a form everyone can read.
Reliefs may depict Our Lady with the Christ Child, the Sacred Heart of Jesus or the Immaculate Heart of Mary, or scenes from Scripture such as the sacrifice of Isaac, or the young Tobias traveling with the archangel Raphael. Like statues, they draw us to prayer, recalling the mysteries of faith and the holy men and women who intercede for us.
Because a relief is shallow, it can bring sacred art to places where there is no room for a statue: a chapel or classroom, a pillar or a narrow wall, a shrine, or a family home. A well-placed relief quietly invites everyone who passes by to pause and lift their heart to God.
