About this collection
About Chasubles & Vestments
Vestments should be worthy of the Mass and sturdy enough for years of use. This collection offers new chasubles and vestment sets, most of them five-piece sets with chasuble, stole, maniple, burse and chalice veil. Many are made in Europe, mostly in the Roman cut with some semi-Gothic sets, on velvet or damask, with embroidery, metallic fringe, and lined and weighted construction.
Colors include violet, gold, white and green, with designs such as the Lamb, the pelican, the Three Hearts and standing angels.
Choosing vestments
Check which pieces a set includes, the liturgical color you need, and the cut your priests prefer. Some sets are on hand and others are made to order, so ask about timing before a feast. Listed prices currently run from about $550 to $3,450. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also copes and ombrellinos and canopies.
Chasubles & Vestments
In the Sacred Liturgy
The chasuble is the outermost vestment the priest wears to offer Mass. Its name comes from the Latin casula, "little house," because it once covered the wearer completely. It has long been understood as a sign of charity, and of the yoke of Christ, which the priest takes up in His service.
A traditional Mass set includes the chasuble with a matching stole, maniple, chalice veil and burse, often called a five-piece set. The color follows the season or feast: white or gold for feasts of Our Lord, Our Lady and the saints who were not martyrs; red for Pentecost and the martyrs; green for the ordinary Sundays of the year; violet for Advent and Lent; and black for Masses for the dead. Rose may be worn on Gaudete and Laetare Sundays.
The Roman chasuble, sometimes called a "fiddleback," has a shaped front panel, while the Gothic chasuble falls in fuller folds from the shoulders. Both are often embroidered with crosses, sacred monograms and symbols.
