About this collection

About Christ Appliques

Symbols of Christ have adorned altar fronts and pulpits for centuries. This collection offers carved wood appliques of those symbols: IHS monograms in 6, 8, 10 and 12-inch sizes and other IHS designs, the Chi-Rho, an INRI banner, the Sacred Heart, a carved Lamb for an altar, and pelican appliques, the ancient image of Christ feeding his people with his own blood.

Several designs can be carved to a custom size.

Using appliques

Appliques can be fixed to a new altar or ambo, or added to existing furnishings to give them more meaning. Decide on size and finish, stained to match or painted and gilded. Listed prices currently run from about $60 to $360; a few are quoted. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also Marian appliques and carved relief panels.

Christ Appliques

In the Sacred Liturgy

Since the earliest centuries Christians have used symbols to express their faith in Christ. Carved as appliqués, these symbols can be fixed to the front of an altar, a tabernacle, an ambo, a reredos or a wall, giving furnishings and architecture a clear and lasting meaning.

The IHS is a monogram of the holy name of Jesus, formed from the first letters of His name in Greek. The Chi-Rho joins the Greek letters X and P, the first two letters of "Christ." INRI stands for the Latin title fixed above the Cross, "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The pelican, shown feeding her young with her own blood, is an ancient symbol of Christ, who gives us His Body and Blood in the Eucharist. The Sacred Heart, burning with love and encircled with thorns, recalls Christ's love for every person.

Appliqués are usually carved in wood and may be left natural, painted or gilded to match the furnishings they adorn.

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth
