Processional Crucifixes
Processional crucifixes lead the way in liturgical processions, carried high so that all may follow the Cross of Christ.
About this collection
About Processional Crucifixes
The processional cross leads the entrance procession, funerals and outdoor processions. This collection offers processional crucifixes in polished and lacquered brass, most with a silver-plated corpus and INRI, set on brass poles of about 50 to 52 inches. Styles range from traditional Gothic and ornate designs to smaller crosses, and there is a metropolitan (archiepiscopal) cross for an archbishop.
Many processional crosses match a series of altar candlesticks, an altar crucifix and censer stand.
What to consider
Check the overall height with the pole fitted, and consider whether you need a base stand to hold the cross in the sanctuary; stands are usually sold separately. Listed prices currently run from about $915 to $1,550. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also altar crucifixes and processional torches.
Processional Crucifixes
In the Sacred Liturgy
A processional crucifix is a crucifix mounted on a tall staff and carried at the head of liturgical processions. The server who carries it is called the crucifer. Its place at the front shows that the Church follows Christ crucified wherever she goes, through this life to the glory of heaven.
The processional cross leads the entrance procession at Mass, and it is carried in processions on feast days, on Palm Sunday, at funerals and in Eucharistic processions such as Corpus Christi. Two servers with candles or processional torches usually walk on either side of it, and the figure of Christ faces forward, in the direction the procession moves. When it is not being carried, it is often placed in a stand in the sanctuary.
Processional crucifixes are usually made of brass or bronze, often gilded, and their crosses are frequently ornate, with decorated ends, a sculpted corpus and sometimes engraved or enameled details.
