About this collection

About Holy Water Fonts

Holy water fonts at the church door remind the faithful of their baptism each time they enter. This collection offers wall-mounted fonts in solid brass, including Gothic, angel and hammered designs, most with a bowl about four to five inches across, and a 40-inch standing font with a glass bowl. There is also a hand-engraved copper and silver-plate font with a hand-blown glass bowl.

What to check

Note how far each font projects from the wall and the bowl size and depth, especially for a busy entrance. Mounting hardware is usually not included, so plan fixings for your wall type. A standing font suits a vestibule where wall mounting is not possible.

Listed prices currently run from about $385 to $1,995. Call or request a quote with any questions. Freight is billed separately. See also holy water buckets and sprinklers and marble baptismal fonts.

Holy Water Fonts

In the Sacred Liturgy

A holy water font, or stoup, holds holy water near the entrance of a church. On entering, Catholics dip their fingers into the water and make the sign of the cross. This simple act recalls our Baptism, in which we were washed clean and made children of God, and prepares us to come before Him in prayer.

Fonts may be fixed to the wall beside the door, set on a pedestal, or made as small wall fonts for the home, where blessing oneself with holy water is a beautiful family custom. Wall fonts are often designed with a sculpted or painted backplate showing Our Lord, Our Lady, angels or a cross above the basin.

Holy water fonts are made in many materials, including marble, onyx, brass, bronze, porcelain and resin. Whatever its material, a font should be easy to reach, easy to keep clean and always filled, so that everyone who enters can begin with a blessing.
