New Wood Altar Rails
In the Sacred Liturgy
The altar rail, or communion rail, runs across the front of the sanctuary. It marks the boundary between the sanctuary, where the Holy Sacrifice is offered, and the nave, where the faithful pray, without hiding the altar from view. In this way it expresses both the holiness of the altar and the closeness of the people to it.
At the rail the faithful traditionally kneel to receive Holy Communion. Kneeling is a natural gesture of adoration before Christ, truly present in the Host, and the rail gives support to those who kneel, including the elderly. The priest moves along the rail giving Communion, accompanied by a server with the communion plate. Many rails include gates that open into the sanctuary.
Wood rails can be carved in Roman, Romanesque or Gothic styles, in oak and other hardwoods, with turned balusters, arches or pierced panels, and are often made to match a wood altar.
