Oil Stocks
In the Sacred Liturgy
Oil stocks are small, tightly closing vessels that hold the holy oils used in the sacraments. The Church uses three oils, all blessed or consecrated by the bishop at the Chrism Mass in Holy Week: the oil of catechumens, used before Baptism; the sacred chrism, used in Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders; and the oil of the sick, used in the Anointing of the Sick.
A single oil stock holds one oil, often the oil of the sick, which a priest carries when he visits the sick and the dying. A triple oil stock holds all three, each in its own compartment, usually marked with letters so that the oils are never confused. Inside, the oil is often held on a small piece of cotton to prevent spills.
Oil stocks are usually made of silver, silver-plate or gilded metal, with screw-on caps, and are often carried in a small case. Between uses they are kept, with the larger vessels of oil, in the ambry.
Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord
