About Ambries
An ambry is a small cabinet, set into the wall, where the holy oils are kept. This collection offers two wall ambries with a front door and a box recessed into the wall: a smaller model about 11 3/4 inches tall and a larger one about 16 1/2 inches tall. Check the box depth against your wall before ordering. Listed prices currently run from about $975 to $1,900. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also oil stocks.
Ambries
In the Sacred Liturgy
An ambry, from the Latin armarium, "cupboard," is a secure cabinet, usually set into or fixed to the wall of the sanctuary or baptistery, in which the three holy oils are kept. These are the oil of catechumens, used before Baptism; the sacred chrism, used in Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders and in the dedication of churches and altars; and the oil of the sick, used in the Anointing of the Sick.
Each year the bishop blesses the oils, and consecrates the chrism, at the Chrism Mass in Holy Week. They are then given to every parish of the diocese, where they are kept until the following year. Because they are sacred and are used in the sacraments, the oils are stored with care, locked away and protected.
An ambry is often made with the same care as the other furnishings of the sanctuary, with a locking door decorated with a cross or with the names of the oils. It is a quiet reminder of the sacraments through which Christ heals, strengthens and consecrates His people.
