Tabernacle Stands
In the Sacred Liturgy
The tabernacle, where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved, stands in a place that is prominent, worthy and suited to prayer. In many churches it rests on the high altar or within a reredos. Where it stands on its own, it is set on a tabernacle stand, a pillar or pedestal that raises it so that it can be seen from throughout the church and approached with reverence.
Because the tabernacle is to be immovable and secure, its stand must be solid and stable, fixed firmly in place, with the tabernacle securely anchored to it. Its design gives the tabernacle dignity and draws the eye to the place of Christ's presence, beside which a sanctuary lamp burns at all times.
Tabernacle stands are made of marble, wood or metal, sometimes with a marbleized finish, carved or paneled sides, and a top shaped to receive the tabernacle. They are often designed to match the altar and the other furnishings of the sanctuary.
How lovely is thy dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!
