About this collection
About Statue Pedestals
A good pedestal lifts a statue to the right height and ties it to the architecture around it. This collection offers statue pedestals from low plinths about 21 inches tall to ornate pedestals about 44 to 47 inches tall, with tops around 24 to 31 inches square. There are also custom oak pedestals with real marble inserts, including Gothic designs, made to order and priced by size.
Sizing a pedestal
Measure the statue's base and make sure the pedestal top is a little larger. Consider the combined height of statue and pedestal against the wall, window or niche behind it, and the viewing distance from the pews. Listed prices currently run from about $120 to $2,200; custom oak and marble pedestals are quoted. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also saint statues and statue halos.
Statue Pedestals
In the Sacred Liturgy
A statue is meant to be seen and to draw people to prayer. A pedestal raises it to the right height so that it can be seen across a church or chapel, gives it a place of honor, and sets it apart from its surroundings, just as a niche or side altar does in a traditional church.
Pedestals are used for statues of Our Lord, Our Lady and the saints in naves, side chapels, shrines and entrances, and in schools and homes. Many have a broad top on which flowers or candles can be placed, so that the pedestal becomes a small shrine where the faithful stop to pray. A pair of matching pedestals can frame an altar or sanctuary with statues on either side.
Pedestals are made of wood, marble or a combination of both, in Gothic, classical and other styles, to suit the statue and the architecture. Above all, a pedestal must be sturdy and stable, sized to bear the weight of its statue safely.
