About this collection
About Server Patens
A server's paten is held beneath the chin of each communicant so that no particle of the Host falls. This collection offers a new communion paten for servers and a paten with a wood handle, both suited to parishes that use patens at the altar rail. Listed prices currently run from about $269 to $400. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also wood altar rails.
Server Patens
In the Sacred Liturgy
A server's paten, also called a communion plate, is a flat dish with a handle, held by the altar server beneath the chin of each person receiving Holy Communion. If the Host, or any fragment of it, should fall, it is caught on the paten rather than falling to the floor.
This small vessel expresses a great truth. Catholics believe that Christ is wholly present in every part of the consecrated Host, even the smallest particle. For this reason the server moves along the altar rail beside the priest, holding the paten carefully, and after Communion the paten is brought to the altar so that any fragments can be gathered into the chalice and reverently consumed.
Server's patens are usually made of polished brass, silver-plate or gilded metal, with a smooth upper surface on which particles can easily be seen. Many are engraved with a cross or another symbol of the Eucharist.
Gather up the fragments left over, that nothing may be lost.
