Church Nativity Sets
In the Sacred Liturgy
The Nativity scene, also called a crèche or crib, shows the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem: the Christ Child in the manger, Mary and Joseph beside Him, the ox and the ass, the shepherds and their sheep, the angels, and later the Magi with their gifts. It invites everyone, young and old, to kneel in wonder before the mystery of God made man.
The custom is traditionally traced to St Francis of Assisi, who in 1223 arranged a living Nativity scene at Greccio in Italy so that the people could see with their own eyes the humility of the Lord's birth. Since then the crib has become a beloved tradition in churches, homes and public squares.
In many homes and parishes the figure of the Christ Child is placed in the manger on Christmas Eve, and the Magi arrive on the Epiphany. Nativity figures are made in many sizes, from tabletop sets to life-size scenes, and may be painted in full color or left white.
