Host Holders
Host boxes: small covered vessels made to keep altar breads, or the luna, with fitting care.

About this collection
About Host Holders
A host box keeps unconsecrated altar breads clean and ready in the sacristy. This collection offers host boxes and host holders in polished and lacquered brass and in silver plate, including a traditional box that can also serve as a luna custodial.
Listings give the height and inside diameter, so you can match the box to the hosts your parish uses. Several are compact enough to keep in a sacristy drawer or cabinet.
What to check
Measure your large and small hosts and compare them with the inside diameter, and consider how many hosts you keep on hand. Listed prices currently run from about $155 to $295. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also luna custodials and chalices and ciboria.
Host Holders
In the Sacred Liturgy
A host box is a small, lidded vessel made to hold hosts. Before Mass, the altar breads that will be offered and consecrated are kept in a clean, closed container so that they stay fresh and protected, and are then placed on the paten or in the ciborium for the Offertory. Some host boxes are also made to hold the luna, the small case that keeps the large Host for the monstrance; these are often called luna boxes.
Because it holds what is set apart for the altar, a host box is made with the same care as the other sacred vessels. It is usually round, with a close-fitting lid often topped by a cross, and is made of polished brass, silver-plate or gilded metal, sometimes engraved or decorated with symbols of the Eucharist.
Though small, a host box is part of the quiet preparation that goes before every Mass in the sacristy, where everything that will be used at the altar is made ready with reverence.
