Four Evangelists & Twelve Apostles
In the Sacred Liturgy
The Four Evangelists, St Matthew, St Mark, St Luke and St John, wrote the four Gospels. Since the early centuries each has been represented by one of the living creatures from the visions of Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation: a man or angel for Matthew, whose Gospel opens with the human ancestry of Christ; a lion for Mark, whose Gospel begins with the voice crying in the wilderness; an ox for Luke, whose Gospel opens with the priest Zechariah offering sacrifice in the Temple; and an eagle for John, whose Gospel soars to the eternal Word.
The Twelve Apostles were chosen by Christ as the foundation of His Church. Each is traditionally shown with an emblem, often recalling his martyrdom: the keys for St Peter, the saltire cross for St Andrew, the scallop shell for St James the Greater, and the knife for St Bartholomew.
These symbols are carved for altars, pulpits, ambos, doors and ceilings, where they proclaim the apostolic faith of the Church.
built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone
