About this collection

About Custom Carved and Cast Statues

Some statues need to be made from scratch. This collection presents custom statues made for churches: life-size figures with real gold gilding and hand-painted decoration, very large kneeling angels imported from Italy for a church in Texas, and bronze statues of St John the Baptist and St Vincent de Paul.

We can also order any saint, Christ or Marian figure or relief in the size, shape or color you need, working from your references and the space where it will stand.

How to commission

Send the figure, size, finish and any reference images. One bronze statue currently carries a listed price of about $12,500; the others are quoted on request. Call or request a quote. Freight is billed separately. See also wood carved statues and custom statues.

Custom Carved and Cast Statues

In the Sacred Liturgy

A carved statue made for a particular church or chapel becomes part of its life of prayer. For centuries parishes, religious houses and families have commissioned images of their patron saints, of Our Lady and of Christ, shaped for the place where they will stand and the devotion they serve.

Wood has been used for sacred sculpture since the early Middle Ages. A carver usually works from a model or drawing, first roughing out the figure from the block and then refining it with finer tools until the face, hands and garments take shape. The finished statue may be left in natural wood, stained, or painted and gilded, a technique known as polychrome.

When a statue is commissioned, its size, pose, attributes and finish can be chosen to suit the setting: a niche or side altar, a reredos, a shrine or a home. A well-made carving, cared for and kept indoors, can be treasured for generations as a lasting place of prayer.
